What is the polarization function of a sensor?

 

We often say that photoelectric sensors with a polarization function detect objects more accurately. Because retro-reflective photoelectric sensors may not be able to distinguish whether it is the light of the detected object or the light reflected from the mirror when detecting highly reflective objects, they are prone to failure. Polarizers can easily solve this problem by using the principle of polarization of light.

A polarizer is placed in the sensor. The polarizer is a grid with many slits, and only light waves that match its polarization direction can pass through the slits on the corresponding polarization filter (horizontal filters can only pass through horizontally polarized light waves, and vertical filters can only pass through vertically polarized light waves). When there is no object to be measured, the reflector will reflect the horizontally polarized light wave and reverse its polarization direction by 90 °, so that the return of the vertically polarized light wave can pass through the vertical polarization filter in front of the receiver and reach the phototransistor at the receiving end, the light beam forms a loop. When the object is detected, the reflected beam attenuates a lot, and the photoelectric switch outputs a signal. If the object to be detected is glass or mirror, the reflectivity is very strong, the intensity of the reflected light wave from its glass surface is constant, but the polarization direction of the light wave does not change. The reflected light is still horizontally polarized, and the horizontally polarized light cannot pass through the vertical polarizer in front of the receiver. Thus, the beam circuit is interrupted and the photoelectric switch outputs a signal because the receiver cannot receive the light wave.
